Nextdoor Insights Series #7: Neighbours have found their new normal

As we end the year, many of us have settled into a new normal with spending, work/life balance, and a return to in-person activities. 

New data from Nextdoor shows how neighbours’ shopping behaviors, brand expectations, and travel plans are shaping up for the holiday season and into 2022. Find the full report here.

Neighbours are spending again.

Neighbours are becoming optimistic about the future of their finances. 53% say they plan to spend as they normally would this holiday season (vs. 32% in 2020). Some are even exploring cryptocurrency.

A work/lifestyle balance is essential.

36% of neighbours  — and 56% of neighbours ages 18-34  — are likely to look for a new job or leave their current job in the next 6 months. 3 in 10 say they want to do work that makes them happier, and 1 in 5 also say saving for retirement has become more important.

In-store shopping is back.

Neighbours prefer a mix of online and offline shopping across categories. Neighbours ages 18-34 are 69% more likely to buy beauty products online only.

Brand expectations have increased.

Neighbours want brands to listen to customer feedback, be transparent about data collection and be socially responsible. 29% of neighbours ages 18-34 and 28% of urban neighbours say they tend to buy brands they see advertised. Younger groups want brands to care about social causes, while older audiences want brands to improve their lives.

Holiday travel and shopping are on the rebound.

43% say they typically travel to see friends and family as part of their holiday celebrations. Neighbours ages 18-34 and in urban areas are most keen to go abroad again.
